How to Prevent Cavities

July 7, 2021

Tooth decay or cavities can affect the enamel and the dentin of the tooth. It’s important to take measures to prevent tooth decay. For more information about cavities and how to prevent them, call Livermore Dental & Orthodontics.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay occurs when foods with carbohydrates are left on the teeth. The mouth’s bacteria digest the leftover food and turn them into acid: the acid, food, bacteria, and saliva form plaque. The plaque sticks to the teeth, and the acids dissolve the enamel, causing cavities.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

There are several ways to prevent tooth decay at home. Preventive methods help to put a stop to dental issues before they occur. When you practice good oral hygiene habits at home, you can save time and money at the dentist’s office.

These are some of the ways you can fight cavities:

  • Brush your teeth two or more times per day. If possible, brush your teeth after meals and before bed.
  • Floss your teeth twice per day.
  • Use mouthwash with fluoride and antiseptic ingredients, which can protect the teeth while killing bacteria.
  • Strengthen your teeth with fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that protects the teeth. You can strengthen your teeth with fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash. We also offer fluoride treatments. Fluoridated water is available as well.
  • Avoid eating carbohydrates that stay on the tooth surface. Limit your consumption of candy, chips, cakes, soda, bread, and cereals.
  • Consider dental sealants. Sealants are plastic coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of your molars and can protect your teeth.

We also suggest going to the dentist twice per year for regular exams and cleanings. At your appointments, your teeth will be examined for any potential dental issues and cleaned to remove plaque. If you notice any concerning signs, contact us, and we can help.
