What is a Root Canal?

The most common type of endodontic surgery is a root canal. We perform root canals often, but not everyone knows what to expect. If you are getting this procedure, it may help you to know what the procedure is like.

First, your teeth will be examined, and you will get X-rays to give our team a good look at your teeth. This will ensure you get the proper treatment.

At the time of the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered, which works to numb the area so you can stay comfortable. A dental dam is also placed in your mouth to stop the infection from spreading to other areas of the mouth.

An opening is created so the pulp can be cleaned. After the area is cleaned, the root canal will be sealed with gutta-percha. Later, a crown will be placed to improve the tooth’s functionality.

How to Recover from a Root Canal

Following a root canal, you will be given complete recovery instructions. It’s important to follow these guidelines for a successful recovery. If you notice concerning signs or have any questions as you recover, give us a call.

For a few days following the procedure, you will need to rest. You should avoid physical activity if possible. You should also eat soft foods to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the area as it heals.
